Further understanding of the applications of slurry pumps

Due to the limitations inherent in its name, the term “slurry pump” is often misunderstood by those outside the industry. In fact, mud pumps, impurity pumps, dredging pumps, and desilting pumps all fall within the application scope of slurry pumps.

In the application of slurry pumps, it is crucial to pay attention to proper design, accurate calculations, and appropriate selection. These points are extremely important.

Slurry pumps are widely used in mining, power generation, metallurgy, coal, environmental protection, and other industries to transport slurries containing abrasive solid particles. Examples include the transportation of ore pulp in metallurgical and mining plants, hydraulic ash removal in thermal power plants, coal slurry and heavy media transport in coal washing plants, and dredging and silt removal in rivers and waterways. In the chemical industry, they can also be used to transport corrosive slurries containing crystals.

Firstly, in terms of applications in mineral processing plants, approximately 80% of these pumps are used in the mining industry’s mineral processing plants. Due to the harsh operating conditions during the initial ore processing stage, the service life of slurry pumps in this stage is generally low. Of course, different types of ore have different abrasive properties. In stages such as concentrate transportation, where the abrasiveness is relatively reduced, the overall service life of the pump is longer. Therefore, when general users frequently ask suppliers about the service life of their products during the procurement process, strictly speaking, no manufacturer will make an unfounded promise to the user regarding an exact service life cycle. This is because the service life of wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant components depends on many different factors. The diversity and complexity of operating conditions mean that materials of the same quality will have varying service lives. However, during the initial selection phase, reputable manufacturers can provide reasonable design and selection recommendations based on the specific operating conditions.

Secondly, in the power industry, primarily in thermal power plants, the main types of power generation in my country are currently thermal power and hydropower. In thermal power plants, due to the large amount of coal used for power generation, the slag or ash produced after combustion needs to be removed. Slurry pumps are used for this ash removal process. The slag, after being mixed with a certain amount of water, is transported to the ash disposal area by the slurry pump. Therefore, slurry pumps are sometimes also referred to as ash pumps in power plants.

Furthermore, in the coal washing industry, due to varying operating conditions, larger coal lumps and gangue can easily cause blockages, placing high demands on the design of slurry pumps. A coal washing plant under the Huaibei Mining Bureau adopted a specially designed slurry pump in 2005, replacing the previously imported Australian pumps. It has been operating normally ever since, handling large coal lumps and gangue without blockages, and its wear life has exceeded that of the imported pumps.

In the field of sand extraction from seawater, slurry pumps are gradually gaining acceptance among customers. However, when used for sand extraction in seawater or dredging in rivers, slurry pumps are more commonly referred to as sand pumps or dredging pumps. Despite the different names, in terms of structural characteristics and pump performance principles, they can all be broadly classified as slurry pumps. Therefore, in seawater sand mining, it is often called a sand pump, while in river dredging, it is customarily called a dredging pump. Although slurry pumps have a wide range of uses, correct application is crucial. Due to the limitations of the name itself, some people outside the industry misunderstand slurry pumps. In fact, mud pumps, impurity pumps, dredging pumps, and silt removal pumps all fall within the scope of slurry pump applications. During the application of slurry pumps, it is essential to pay attention to reasonable design, accurate calculations, and appropriate selection; these points are very important.
